Travis Notvisky
A proud citizen and lifelong resident of the Grand Portage Anishinaabe Nation in northeast Minnesota, Travis has been photographing the woods and waters of the north shore of Lake Superior for more than 30 years. He is a self taught nature and wildlife photographer whose work focuses primarily on his ancestral homelands in Minnesota.
His vibrant images reflect and transmit the awe- inspiring scenes he has witnessed. Travis specializes in images of nature and wildlife, but his favorite subject by far is the night sky. He devotes countless hours to capturing images of star-filled skies and the Aurora Borealis (northern lights). He hopes that his passion for photography will inspire others to spend more time outside enjoying all the beauty that mother nature has to offer.
He served as Co-Producer of Northern Nights, Starry Skies, an award-winning documentary co-produced in 2022 by Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education and PBS North. His creative work was featured extensively in the film, which celebrates the star-bright skies and dark sky places of the Minnesota-Ontario border region, Indigenous star knowledge, and our stewardship of the night sky.
Travis also is the photographer for the new book Spirits Dancing - The Night Sky, Indigenous Knowledge & Cultural Connections to the Cosmos, published on November 7, 2023. Written by astrophysicist, artist, and director of the Native Skywatchers research and programming initiative, Annette S. Lee, the book explores the wonders of star bathing. Sitting quietly under the stars, knowing that humans have always done this, knowing that we literally come from the stars.
